Guy-Blaché adapte l’œuvre de Victor Hugo, Notre-Dame de Paris (1831). Son film, La Esméralda (1905), inspira une multitude de versions américaines, dont The Hunchback de Van Dyke Brooke (1909) mais aussi européennes, voire Notre-Dame de Paris d’Albert Capellani (1911). L’importance du film d’Alice Guy-Blaché est sans conteste car il est le premier à introduire le monstre à l’écran.
